What is an Ausbildung in Germany and how does the dual system work?
Ausbildung is Germany's official dual vocational education system combining workplace hands-on training (approx. 70% of time) with classroom study at a vocational school (Berufsschule, approx. 30%). Trainees work under a formal German contract, gain practical industry experience, and earn a monthly salary throughout the 2 to 3.5-year duration.
Do I get paid during an Ausbildung? What is the monthly stipend?
Yes! Ausbildung is a fully paid training program. Depending on the sector and state, monthly stipends start between €950 and €1,490 per month in Year 1, increasing each subsequent training year. For instance, Nursing trainees in Bavaria earn around €1,340/month in Year 1, rising to over €1,500/month by Year 3.
Do I need a Blocked Account (Sperrkonto) for an Ausbildung visa?
In almost all cases, NO! Because your official German Ausbildung contract includes a guaranteed monthly salary meeting German visa living standards (typically >€903/month net), embassy regulations exempt you from opening a €11,904 blocked account.
What German language level is required for an Ausbildung?
A minimum of B1 level German certification (Goethe, TELC, or ÖSD) is required for most technical and commercial trades. For Healthcare, Nursing, and Client-Facing roles, B2 level German is mandatory so you can attend Berufsschule lectures and communicate with clients seamlessly.
Can non-EU international applicants apply for Ausbildung in Germany?
Absolutely! Under Germany's Skilled Immigration Act (Fachkräfteeinwanderungsgesetz), non-EU candidates who meet the language and school-leaving qualification requirements have equal access to German vocational training openings.
What are the age limits and academic eligibility criteria for Ausbildung?
There is officially no upper age limit for starting an Ausbildung in Germany. Academically, you need to have completed 10th or 12th grade (Higher Secondary Education) from a recognized board.
How long does an Ausbildung program last? Can it be shortened?
Standard Ausbildung programs last between 3 to 3.5 years. If you demonstrate strong academic performance or already possess relevant prior university credits/diplomas, your program duration can be reduced by 6 to 12 months with company and chamber (IHK/HWK) approval.
